Remembering Beautiful Warren, Ohio

Growing up on the north end of Warren, Ohio, in the forties and fifties was a unique experience.  If you've owned Warren Ohio real estate for some time you'll probably remember some of these fond memories of our area. Take a walk with me down memory lane.  Do you remember when?

  • The Sanitary Dairy wagon pulled by a horse making deliveries.
  • The knife sharpener with his grinder walking the neighborhoods getting business.
  • The ice man delivering blocks of ice and whacking off a hunk, the poor kid's popsickle, for children on steamy summer afternoons.
  • The winter air heavy with the smell of coal-burning furnaces and soot.
  • Clothes hanging on the line on Monday mornings.
  • The rag man barking for customers as he pulled his cart.
  • The bakery truck delivery and the delicious aroma of the rolls and donut drawer.
  • Bank Night on Thursdays at the downtown theaters.
  • The beauty and size of the lobby at the Harris Warren Theater.
  • Rodney Ann's next to the Harris Warren Theater for a treat after the movie.
  • Monday night shopping until 9 p.m. downtown.
  • Young men with snappy cars cruising through downtown Warren or girl-watching  in front of Union Savings on Monday evenings.
  • The department stores:  Howard Shields, Rappold's, House of Fashion, Griswold's, and Warner's.
  • Sticking one's feet in the x-ray machine in Sears' shoe department.
  • Skyscraper ice cream cones at Isaly's.
  • Catching a bus from either side of Market Street to the far ends of town.
  • Reverend Bob Richards, Olympic star, speaking at the new Harding Field House.
  • Ice-skating to music on a pond swept clean by park employees at Packard or Quinby Park.
  • Feet check by the lifeguards at Packard Park Swimming Pool.
  • The forbidden, dangerous Dead Man's Trail along the Mahoning River at Packard Park.
  • Swimming in the Mahoning River and the rope swing.
  • The bustle of recreational boating or fishing on the Mahoning River at Packard Park.
  • Wedding receptions or other parties at Packard Park Shelter House.
  • Y Teens or Canteen (a dance) every Friday night in the Pine Room at the YWCA.
  • Record hops at the American Legion (present Mocha House), Moose Hall, or in Christ Our King parking lot in the summer.
  • A circus camped in a pasture on Comstock N.W. with elephants, camels, and more.
  • The Trumbull County Fair held on a portion of the present Harding High School property.
  • The melancholy sound of train whistles at night as trains rumbled through town.
  • Steam engines filling up with water at Park or Hall Avenue.
  • The beauty of the lights on the Courthouse dome installed each Christmas season.
I trust some of these have tugged a bit at your heart strings as they have mine.  We've come a long way from these memories, but our area continues to be a wonderful place to live with new traditions creating more value for life here.
